A tax advisor may be asked to seek an advance ruling from a government on tax consequences. We may also be asked to provide an opinion to third parties. We are obligated to provide competent advice based on the law. This may include advising our client as to what is or is not allowable, or suggesting how a transaction may be properly restructured. In doing so, a tax advisor may refer not only to the law, but to other considerations such as moral, economic, social and political factors that may be relevant to the client’s situation.
